How to Write Meaningful Wedding Vows: 7 Tips for Making Your Big Moment Unforgettable

Writing your own wedding vows is one of the most personal and memorable parts of your wedding ceremony. It's the moment where you get to express your love and commitment in your own words, making it uniquely yours. However, if you're feeling the pressure of putting those feelings into words, don’t stress! Here are some practical tips to help you write vows that will wow your partner (and make your guests swoon).

1. Start Early – Don’t Leave It Until the Last Minute!

Waiting until the night before your wedding is not the best time to start writing your vows. Give yourself plenty of time to reflect on what you want to say. Start jotting down ideas as soon as possible, even if they’re just random thoughts. You can polish them later. The more time you give yourself, the more genuine and heartfelt your vows will be.

2. Reflect on Your Relationship

Think about your relationship milestones, inside jokes, and what makes your partner special. How did you meet? What challenges have you overcome together? What little quirks make you smile? Use these personal memories to craft a story that’s unique to your relationship. This makes your vows not only heartfelt but also personal.

3. Focus on the Future as Well as the Past

Your vows should celebrate where you’ve been as a couple, but they should also look ahead to your future together. Talk about the kind of partner you promise to be and what you’re excited to experience together in the years to come. Whether it’s “I promise to always support your career dreams” or “I look forward to many years of pizza on the couch while we watch Netflix,” this balance keeps your vows sweet and forward-thinking.

4. Keep it Real – Be Authentic

Don’t worry about trying to sound like a poet or impress everyone with grand declarations of love. What matters most is that your vows feel authentic and true to who you both are. Speak from the heart, and let your personality shine through. Whether you’re romantic, funny, or even a little bit cheeky, your vows should reflect you.

5. Include Promises That Reflect Your Relationship

At the core of wedding vows are the promises you’re making to each other. These can be deep and serious, like “I promise to stand by you through thick and thin,” or light-hearted, such as “I promise to always share the last slice of pizza with you.” Make promises that resonate with your relationship, blending both the heartfelt and the fun.

6. Keep it Concise (But Meaningful)

While you might be tempted to write pages and pages, remember that shorter, more impactful vows are easier to remember and have a bigger emotional punch. Aim for one to two minutes in length—just enough to convey your love and commitment without going overboard. Your guests (and your partner) will thank you!

7. Practice, But Don’t Memorise

It’s important to practise reading your vows out loud to ensure they flow naturally and sound like you. However, don’t stress about memorising every word—having a printed copy on the big day is totally fine. You’ll be in the moment, and your partner won’t mind if you glance down at your notes.

Bonus Tip: Inject a Little Humour

Humour can break the ice and make your vows even more memorable. If laughter is a big part of your relationship, don’t be afraid to add a funny moment or two. Whether it’s referencing a silly habit or a shared inside joke, humour can make your vows stand out while lightening the mood.

Writing your wedding vows can seem daunting, but remember, they don’t need to be perfect—they just need to be real. Your vows are a reflection of your love story, so embrace the imperfections, and focus on what truly matters: making a meaningful commitment to the person you love.

If you’re still feeling stuck, don’t worry! As a fun and modern celebrant, I’m always here to help my couples craft their perfect vows. Whether you’re after some guidance or just a second pair of eyes, let’s work together to make sure your vows are just as unique and special as your love story.
